8.6 is great for that config. More ppc code = faster. You won't notice much of a ram hit, course that depends on what you do, but for MS office, internet, light dtp, mp3 it'll work great. Drop in a big HD, they're cheap now. I've got an 18gb in mine but I want one of those 60 giggers!
