How much ram you got in that 270c/PPC? If 32MB or more I'd suggest trying
OS 9.1. With VM enabled (or with RamDoubler) the OS footprint is only
perhaps 12-15mb ram. It does take longer to boot but of all the possible
OSes you can run OS9 contains the most PPC-native code. In use it feels
quite responsive and many ops are verifiably faster than with any other
MacOS version.

I know I'm on the less popular side of this issue, but having run OS 9 in
_every_ PowerBook from 540c/PPC to Pismo, I've grown to appreciate OS9's
modernity, flexibility, robustness and stability (compared to earlier Mac
OSes at least.)

If for whatever reason you decide to stay with system 7, best choice is
7.6.1. You can add any number of bits from OS8, most obviously the OS 8
Appearance CP. Best OS8 version is 8.6, but if you go that far you really
might as well go straight to 9.1. I generally use system 7.6.1 for
resource-challenged PBs and 9 for everything else.

Other folks usually point out using VM can cut significantly into battery
runtime. I'm usually not far from AC or a 12V outlet so battery runtime
isn't quite as important to me. Just another thing to keep in mind I
suppose as one reflects on one's choices.

hth,

Dan K
