when you set the card up you create multiple small partitions for your VM, so you can switch to the next when a partition 'wears out'

Not only that but they do have a finite life span.

It's usually something on the order of 100,000 read/write cycles which sounds like a lot but if you are using the card for VM you could hit that wall sooner than you expect.
