I've gotten a lot of off-list responses and a lot of good suggestions. Thanks everyone! Unfortunately, my Duo is still eating dirt. I just thought I'd update my previous post by noting what people have suggested and what I've tried. Also, I've make some better observations that might help people to help me. Here goes....... I have this powerbook duo 230 and I decided to take it apart for a couple of reasons. First of all, I wanted to see what kind of ram was in it because I'm planning on getting more. Also, the keyboard and track-ball are terrible. I wanted to try to fix them. After taking everything apart, detaching the keyboard and trackball unit, then re-attaching and putting everything back together, I popped the battery in, plugged the power cord in and tried to start up. Nothing happened. I pushed the power button on the back and it started making this quiet staticy noise. I think it used to make this noise right after it started up. It lasts for maybe a minute or two. I opened it up to see where the noise was coming from. I'm pretty sure that it is coming from something on the upper left corner of the mother board, it deffinately isn't coming from the battery or hard drive and I don't think it's coming from the speaker. I let it sit for about 15 mins and when I checked on it again, the battery was REALLY hot and I could feel that heat through the case, I've heard that this is normal. I took it apart and put it back together a couple more times but I couldn't figure out what was wrong. It still does the same thing when I try to turn it on. When I unplug the AC cord the display flashes, then goes dark again. Nothing happens when I plug the AC cord back in. I unplugged the AC and took out the battery for a while (a few hours I think) then held down the power button on the back for a little over a minute. Someone told me that this resets the power manager. I plugged everything back in, but to no avail. Also, I have never run this powerbook off the battery. I assume the battery is either dead or it's broken because it would never start up off it. I have run it off the AC cord several times. Another thing I've been wondering about is weather I am putting the case back together right and if that might have something to do with the problem. I would assume that it doesn't because I have heard that you can start up without the top of the case or the keyboard attached. I have tried that and got the same results. When I opened up the case for the first time, I broke some plastic tabs, could that cause any of this stuff to happen?? I doubt it, but I thought I'd put it down, just in case. I know this is kind of long, but I wanted to get all the info in one post. Again, thanks to everyone who has sent suggestions. Ben ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net!
