Of course you can't boot a 3400 and a tower G3 and a 2400 from the 
same drive. I wouldn't even try.

I have always understood that different models of Macintosh cause the 
OS installer to install slightly different versions of the System. 
You can't install the OS on one model and then move the drive to a 
completely different model and expect it to work. If the system has 
been installed from a 7100, you can't use that same disk to boot a 
powerbook, or a 7600, or a G3. The only "universal" boot disks are 
the Disk Tools disks, and even these come in different flavors for 
different hardware.
