This is incorrect if OS are custom installed. Easy install configures only
for the specific CPU it is being loaded to. In fact it was the first time
ever that one of my custom configured drives wouldn't run a specific Apple
CPU. I've been doing custom installs of universal systems for years--and my
drives work on all my CPUs because I may have to swap them around or even
travel with one. On the OS CD you can choose your own options and modules.
Since I'm relying on memory, the approximate choices are "universal", "for
this computer only" and possibly on "for all Power PCs only".
In order to install universal on a 2400 you can either connect a CD drive to
the 2400 or run the 2400 in SCSI mode from a master using the choice for
install universal system. In the latter mode you cannot install a 2400
specific (slimmer) system. A third, not "Apple recommended" way which I've
also used is to simply drag copy a previously installed universal system
straight over to the target HD. It works very well.
As a general practice, for users who know their way around a bit, always
choose "custom install" for any piece of software, if only to look first at
the list of items to be installed. Quite often "easy install" can overwrite
newer extensions with older versions or drop unnecessary stuff in. Some of
us prefer to monitor our system folders very closely.
