I can't help with the backup battery, but for the ethernet you might
try SmallDog <http://www.smalldog.com>. Last I knew they still had
several GV 28.8 / 10BT cards for $49. I know it's not the world's
fastest modem, but it's not a bad price for an ethernet PC card.
I bought one for a friend who needed ethernet for her 1400 at school,
it was better than the $100 the bookstore wanted for a card.
BTW, this is Japanese version, so the manuals and s/w in the box is
in Japanese, but SmallDog includes the US s/w too.

straying off the topics meant for this list (sorry!)
Speaking of 1400s, bekewl asked about 1400 G3 upgrades. I too almost
missed out, but was excited when I found someone with 233s about
3 weeks ago after calling some 20 places. Then I got worried when
I never saw anything, called to find out that they mistyped my order
and sold everything but they promised to find one for me. Amazingly
enough they did find one! Not sure if they can do it again, but if you
want to try, check out Computer Town <http://www.computertown.com>
but maybe it's better to call 1.888.313.7941 rather than use the web
page. I wouldn't be too fussy about whether you can get a 233 or a
250, there aren't many of either to be had. Good luck!

standard disclaimers apply for both places - no connection other
than satisfied customer (especially satisfied to see that the 233
turned into a 250).
