i had this happen on my new 230 duo. the problem on my machine was 32-bit addressing
not being turned on in the meory control panel. there's some mention in the TechTool
documentation of a phenomenon whereby the system "eats" RAM without 32-bit addressing
turned on. On my 18M duo, the system went down to using under 2M (from 12M) once it
was turned on.
