Doh!

Thanks guys. As soon as I read the words "32 - bit addressing" I knew that
was the answer, since I had to turn it on when I first installed the RAM
card. It must have been switched off when I reset the Power Manager recently
while trying to get a dud battery to work. Everything is back to normal now.

i had this happen on my new 230 duo. the problem on my machine was 32-bit
addressing not being turned on in the meory control panel. there's some
mention in the TechTool documentation of a phenomenon whereby the system
"eats" RAM without 32-bit addressing turned on. On my 18M duo, the system
went down to using under 2M (from 12M) once it was turned on.
