Your PB should have come with a disk tools image that will boot the
machine. Mine is a boot to 8.5 (I just tested it) and it has no
problem mounting an HFS+ volume.
The only changes I made in mine was getting rid of the 8.5 disk first
aid and replacing it with the disk first aid from 8.6, which I
believe had a few other problems fixed.
If your book doesn't have this anymore on it and you can't locate it,
please contact me off the list, I'd be happy to send you a copy of
the disk image.
I dont think this violates any copywrite rules, since the package
ships with the 2400 and the rights to it should have transfered to
you along with your book.

This is a little disturbing... The power key shouldn't do anything
unless you hold it down for a while. if you accidently hit
command-power you'll get dumped into the debugger, you can exit this
by entering a "g" and pressing enter. But it shouldn't crash you.
