It's possible that you're thinking of the feature where a Duo won't sleep
while connected to an external monitor (a different definition of "sleep").
An external monitor connected to the Dock's video out (a built-in NuBus
device, essentially) will sensibly go into its energy saving mode when the
timer that normally dims the Duo's LCD screen expires. This has been true
since at least 8.0, and probably earlier (my memory is dim too ;).

(note to folks: the digest-creation software truncates lines longer than
256 characters, a not unreasonable limit. Enter hard carriage return
characters after each line, or configure your mail client to do it for you).

Quite likely. The Energy Saver control panel knows how to directly control
the video hardware built in to the Dock and automatically applies the "dim"
settings to that (either that or it knows how to talk to the driver
software for said hardware, which came with the OS). It probably doesn't
work automatically with anyone else's NuBus video card. If it's just a
matter of it notifying the driver then this is a policy decision ("we don't
want to have to support combinations of third-party hardware"), and if it
does the deed directly then it's a technical limitation - either way you
need something a bit more versatile. It is stupid, of course, since it's
software, but since it's referring to the Dock's supported and present
video hardware you can understand the miscommunication.
