Actually, it's not. Sadly, Motorola's web people screwed up the specs they
posted on their web page and grossly understated the G4's power consumption.
After having downloaded their technical documentation, I can safely tell
you that the G4 is very much not a portable system CPU. The peak power
consumption of a G4/400 is about 11.5 W, almost double that of an IBM 400
MHz copper G3. The average figures look similar, but there is also the
matter of the power saving modes. Although the G4 supports the standard
PowerPC low-power modes, it is clear from the specs that they were not a
priority for the G4 designers. For example, the IBM 400 MHz copper G3 uses
1/4 the power of a 400 MHz G4 in nap mode. I believe Apple uses nap mode
to implement processor cycling, so it's an important part of keeping the
PowerBook cool and extending battery life.
