You realize of course that the Apple internal Express Modem is only 14.4.
If you want to do any serious web browsing, you may yet be lugging along
that Teleport Platinum.

Anyway, you should first update to the latest version of the Express Modem
software. Doing so should install everything you need to run the internal
Express Modem. What happened is: the Express Modem software is separate
from the OS (The latest version can be found on your OS 8 disk -- do a
search for modem on your CD-ROM only). When you installed OS 8.1 it
defaulted to a "base" system configuration and disabled the modem software.
You need the Express Modem Control Panel to use the Express Modem software.
You will like the Express Modem once you start using it (accepting its
limitations of course). So don't give up. I would put the old Express Modem
control panel back in the "active" control panel so that the update install
"sees" it, do the same for any other "disabled" communications extensions
or control panels as well. This will ensure the new install gets rid of
anything you don't need.
