Indeed the wizards at a Netscape newsgroup I recently looked up recommend 
setting the disk cache to zero and allocating more RAM to the browser 
(min 16M for Communicator), further recommended is trashing the Netscape 
History file once in a while.

NavCom 2.0 (PPC) is available at http://www.io.com/~jackb/ , there also 
exists vs 1.3 for 68k Macs. I found it convenient, and after all it's a 
three-dollar-shareware...

Following these recommendations has clearly increased Netscape's speed 
and stability for me; I now look forward to finding out whether the 
change of settings will also solve my problem of having to reboot after 
connection failures (there was a short discussion concerning this in 
another thread on this list - Re: reboot...)
