It's hanging off a MiniDock as I write. 
There are a number (i.e. > 1) of versions of the SC/EN; mine is the Mini
SC/EN, specifically for powerbooks.
I'm running OS 8.1, OT 1.3.1. 
I'm able to switch, using Location Manager, between my work's Ethernet
connection and my ISP's PPP connection at will, without having to muck about
with turning extensions on & off.
Did you check SCSI ID, termination, driver software versions...
