Hi,
Yes, you can stay with HFS when you switch to 8.6. You have to
reformat the drive or use one of the conversion utilities if you want
to change it.
I wholeheartedly recommend moving to 8.6 on your 2400. And if you're
still using the original HD I also recommend moving to the HFS+ file
system. I picked up a LOT of space on the drive doing a reformat.
Do a little research first though. Check through version tracker and
macfixit to make sure that you've got any updates to your
applications to make sure they run properly with 8.6. A lot of apps
were upgraded to make them function properly.
I had problems with 7.6 and 8.0, but 7.6.1 and 8.6 were wonderful
releases for me. I do occasionally have crashes, but almost without
exception they were caused by either Netscape or one of my own
fledgling Mac Applications:) I sit out places with my powerbook quite
often to program (sitting in the house all the time isn't that much
fun) and it's worked great for this.
I do see a few degrees cooler running since switching to 8.6, and
perhaps a bit more battery life, but not significantly because my
computing habits dont let the drive spin down much, or the processor
cycle much since I'm constantly saving/compiling. Just typing in Word
however does show a small but noticeable improvement in both
temperature and battery life.
