Sorry if this is too-topic but Tom's very accurate warning reminded me of
an "experiment" a high school buddy an I conducted back in our mindless
youth. A budding scientist/engineer, he came over to my place one night
with an empty fire extinguisher, a weather balloon, an M80 firecracker, and
a "joint" of (if memory serves me right) lye rolled in aluminum foil. We
dropped the joint into the extinguisher, added a little water, screwed the
top back on, and waited for the guage to slowly start to move. We quickly
filled the weather balloon to about a 3' diameter, taped the M80 to the
side of the balloon, and with more nerve than sense, stuck 1/2" of lit
cigarette onto the M80 fuse. We then released this Dead Zepplin into the
nightime Maryland sky. We watched it disappear into the darkness and kept
our eyes fixed in that direction for what seemed like forever. But then
from what we guessed to be about a mile or two away and a couple of hundred
feet in the air we saw (but didn't hear) a pink flash that lasted about as
long as the satisfaction we got from the effort. We eagerly checked the
papers that week hoping to see some mention of it, but nothing. We've
convinced ourselves though, that somewhere in Maryland someone (besides us)
still tells the story of the Night of the Mini-Hindenburg.

Pardon the digression. We now return you to the "Keeping it cool" thread.

>Neat trick, maybe I'll try it one of these days. Just
>remember, HCl + Zn ---> hydrogen gas, a good way to
>turn your hobby area into a miniature Hindenburg, not
>to mention splattering acid all around. Be careful,
>wear your safety glasses!
