> Does anybody know why Duos were called what they were called?
"Duo" was a play on "dual" or "two"
The notion from the start was that the Duo offered "two computers in one" --
a mobile, mini laptop on the road and a desktop machine when docked.
The number system was not based on technical specs. Apple did not begin to
use processor, memory of other technical specs as a means of naming products
until (relatively) recently. The Duo numbering simply represents a hierarchy
-- the higher the number, the more advanced feature set.
The exception to this is that the 230 became the 2300 when the PPC was
introduced, and the 2400 has continued the (brief) tradition of using the
additional 0 to designate the PPC line. A similar approach was taken when
Apple re-packaged the '040-based platforms as PPC models in the mid-1990s.
It is interesting that while the 2400 hundred is not a true Duo (because it
offers many more ports and "stand-alone capability" than the Duo line) it
continued the 2x00 numbering.
