I've just finished reading the Apple Design book and decided to share my
revelations: When Jobs came back aboard Apple, he killed every projectthat
had been the brain child of John Scully. This included the Duo and the
Newton. The reason I mention this in context with the book is that thebook
was published shortly after Jobs came back, before these projects were
canned. Both were mentioned in the book as being high on Apple's list of
items for the third generation design group. In fact they showed"teaser"
pictures of what we now know is the iMac and iBook and included in that
grouping was a "fruity" colored Newton detail and sub-notebook computer.
Sculley canned Jobs. Sculley prophecized about the coming of the
sub-notebook and PDA and launched both types of products at Apple. Jobsgets
even with Scully, kills his dream, buries his seeds, and changes Apple's
focus back to computer appliances: The all-in-one computer that does
everything you'd want it to do. I'm afraid we won't be seeing asub-notebook
for some time to come.
