>I've set about trying to implement this suggestion but notice that >the option in the OT/PPP C-P to do this also involves turning off >error correction? Isn't this a bit risky for things like software >downloads? Not when you're using PPP and TCP/IP, since they're doing their own error detection (and correction in the case of TCP) anyway. It's possible that you may see more disconnects from line noise if your phone lines are especially bad, but you'd notice that fairly quickly and it's unlikely to be a problem. For that matter leaving compression on isn't likely to cause any real trouble - it'll just be a slightly slower connection overall when the serial port can't keep up with the modem. You *can* actually turn off compression without turning off error correction, but the lame OTPPP / Remote Access interface doesn't provide a way to do it (you'll have to manually edit the modem init string in the modem script file, which isn't actually that hard). The actual edit will depend on the modem; mine (Global Village PCMCIA) uses AT%C0 to turn off compression (only). In fact, the modem script gets to decide what that checkbox actually means, so for some modems this may be exactly what's happening anyway. Including mine, I've just noticed: ifstr 5 9 "1" ! ! Varstring 5 == 0, turn off compression protocol in modem. matchclr matchstr 1 9 "OK\13\10" write "AT%C0\13" The checkbox just sets the variable that's tested on the first line. Other modem scripts may do what the control panel actually says and turn off error correction by default, however, so you'll have to check yours if you're concerned (look for that first "ifstr" expression). -- Marc Sira | [EMAIL PROTECTED] "If you can't play with words, what good are they?" ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net!
