Actually RAM is the ONLY upgrade that's easy to install. Just get a
Torx 8 driver, remove the 3 keyboard screws, carefully put the
keyboard on the palm rest and there you are. Exchange the easily
accessible RAM module and that's it.
*Getting* a memory module can be a lot harder. If you hurry you can
get a 48M module (56 total, maxed out) on ebay (#183012119) for the
bargain of 172,50 bucks (and the auction hasn't ended yet!).
I went the hard way and simply bought *another* Duo 2300c with one of
these max modules and many great bonuses like a Dock II and a Newer
Ethernet Microdock (excellent!).
And now I got both Duos sitting on my desk and I'm trying to decide
which one I should keep. They both have their flaws, but I tend to
keeping the new one, so it seems the deal was worth while for me.
I just tested the modems of both, the first Duo with 20MB has a GV
Powerport Mercury, the other the Apple Express Modem. I tested them
with Norton SysInfo, both got the same score (CPU/FPU) with modem
off. Then I made a 14.4 connection to my G3 and tested how much CPU
time the soft modem drivers needed. With the GV modem in use the Duo
only had about 75% of the previous score, the other Duo with the
Express Modem still reached about 84%. The GV software seems to be
less effective indeed (probably a lot of 68k code), as some of you
have guessed. One more reason to keep the new one (with the Express
Modem)...
