Not so much an explanation, as an acknowledgement ...  I too see 
significantly greater stability through the DuoDock.  

Fiddling with the hoard of CP's required to get on-line, I'll often find 
that the Duo has become confused about which port it's supposed to be 
using, and who's using it.  [e.g. AppleTalk CP]

My untrained suspicion is that most software today expects to see two 
serial ports, and gets tripped-up switching between one- and two-port 
mode.
