I'm not sure about the $7 CompactFlash adapter that was reported but what
I would assume with that product as well as the SmartMedia adapter for
reading digital camera memory cards is for (sorry) PC card (or PCMCIA)
slots in notebooks such as our 2400s. I believe the $7 adapter connects
to a CF memory card and lets you insert it into a PC card slot. A SM
adapter (about $53) has a slot for the SM chip and the adapter slips into
a PC card slot.
A "reader" is typically an external device which hooks up via a cable by
serial, USB (and for those unfortunate users of wintel boxes-parallel
port) and has slots for CF and/or SM media. I'm not sure of the price but
I guess one would use it if their camera had no direct cable connection to
the computer (if there is such a poorly designed camera). Additionally,
it saves batteries by not having the camera "on" and connected to the
computer plus there is a speed difference as the reader usually doesn't
have to process stuff from the camera - it's just a convenient conduit.
It's still slower than putting the CF or SM media into a PC slot. But I
understand that not all computers have this option (such as the 270c).
Hope this helps.
