My 2400 has had a near identical problem for most of it's life... the 
bottom slot is the one that does this. Cards inserted there either 
freeze the Mac or prompt me to format it as an unrecognized memory 
card (even if it is a modem, ethernet, whatever.) The eject button 
doesn't work either.

Of course I became aware of this after the warranty expired. =)

I figured I'd just see if the card cage itself could be ordered as a 
repair part from my local friendly Apple Dealer and pop a new one in 
myself someday...
