I have the same problem; the bottom slot doesn't quite work right.
However, I am fairly certain that it's my fault; I believe I damaged
the connector on the motherboard which the card cage plugs in to.
Originally my symptoms were similar to yours -- freezes, etc. This
happened under both Linux and MacOS so I knew it wasn't a software
problem.
I tried to repair it by taking a soldering iron and reheating the
joints on the connector in question. This changed the behavior (no
more crashes, and I can eject cards fine), but the slot still doesn't
function correctly. My Ethernet card is recognized, and it tries to
transmit and receive packets, but it doesn't quite do it. I noticed
while playing around with it under Linux that the Linux PCMCIA driver
reports the Ethernet MAC address wrong when it is inserted into the
bottom slot. This leads me to believe that one or more data bus pins
aren't getting good connection or are shorted to something.
I haven't played around with it any further because I will probably
need to replace the motherboard to fix it. DT&T offers
repair/replace on the 2400 motherboard for about $300, so I may do
that eventually, but really I only need one slot (I only own one
card) so it's not high on my list of things to blow money on. :)
