If the desktop mac has Open Firmware, then you can use the desktop in
something like SCSI Disk Mode. Hook your powerbook to the SCSI port of the
desktop system (you don't need the special SCSI Disk Mode cable for this).
Hold down Command-Option-O-F when you power up the desktop system. Then
power up your Powerbook.

Voila -- because the desktop system is in Open Firmware, it won't try to
control the devices on the bus. Assuming that the desktop's CD-ROM is
bootable, just hold down the C key while your Powerbook boots. If it isn't,
the book will boot from the first bootable drive. If that happens to be the
internal powerbook disk, and you don't want to boot from that, hold down
Delete-Option-Command-Shift (DOCS).
