Toshiba HDs apparently have a different power draw on cold startup, too
great for the 2400 to supply reliably. It goes maybe 1 of 10 times. This is
a well known problem for the 2400.

The SCSI "drive" mode bug was the older ROM codes in the 2400 and 3400.
After upgrading my 3400 at least 2 years ago to a 3500 Kanga board this
limitation disappeared. I've found if you partition a new drive just short
of 4mb (formatted), the next partition will also show up (to a total limit
of around 5mb) as readable/writable. Partition icon may appear generic.
