You've done well, John.  You'll want an Ohm meter with fine-tip test 
probes now.  Test for continuity on each end of the ribbon cable.  Keep 
in mind that corrosion may also occur in the junction connector.  It is 
very difficult to clean these things -- you can "scrub" GENTLY by 
inserting and removing the cable properly into the connector a dozen 
times.  However, if a trace within the ribbon is shot, it can be a bear 
to repair -- easier to get a replacement.
