Marc,

I have this EXACT problem, so please let me know if you find the solution.
The strangest thing is that I can access the drive FINE is SCSI disk mode,
AND EVEN BOOT OFF OF IT!? I have tried low-level reformatting the drive,
reinstalling from the original CD, reinitializing using every version of
Drive Setup known to man, System installs from 7.6 thru 9.0, and nothing so
far has worked. It still boots fine off of an external drive, but that
leaves me too tethered to a power outlet for a lightweight laptop.

I will try installing Linux2000ppc when I get a copy later this week.
Maybe Nuking the drive with an entirely new operating system will talk some
sense into it. I suspect it is the hard drive failing or some connector
going bad (drive controller on motherboard?!), but that still doesn't
explain how it can boot in SCSI disk mode.

I did take it to my local Apple shop, who charged $35 to tell me they
don't know what's wrong, maybe a Memory problem (it has 48MB) which doesn't
sound right since it works if booting externally from CD or Hard Drive.
They offered to send it back to Apple where the minimum charge would be
$120, and I said no. My other option is shipping it to some cheaper tech
folks who know PowerBooks. It IS kind of a bummer that it's going to be a
minimum of $70-100 just for anybody to get inside of one of these, but such
is the nature of small technology I guess.

  Any help/condolences appreciated,

=Dave Holst
