Hi group, Thanks for the replies re:trackball. The story so far: I was given a 280c that had been idle for a long time (battery out). The machine has relatively few hours on it. The battery was totally dead but I have a type3. At first it wouldn't charge but PwrMgrReset cured that. The issue of the moment is communication. There is an internal modem, but I have no specific software for it - perhaps I need some? The behaviour is this: if I try FreePPP 2.6.2 it hangs and the machine locks up at the "looking for modem" stage when I try the internal modem or an external USR. I have used the USR and FreePPP on my 210 (no internal) a lot. If I try OT/PPP the machine locks on bootup at the stage where the menu bar appears but before anything else appears. In the Powerbook Setup panel there is a modem item so I take it the machine knows the modem is there - this is set to "normal" as per the duo-faq <http://www.power-macintosh.com/duo.html>. The system software is 7.6.1, freshly loaded (3 times now!!!) on a re-initialized disc. The FreePPP and OT/PPP are fresh downloads. As I said, I have no software specifically for the modem. I would like to keep the internal modem for convenience, but will tear it out if necessary if that is the only solution. TIA for any (ANY) hints, clues, tips or magical potions... ;} -- TTFN, eh ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net! A listserv for users and fans of Mac subportables.
