My hunch is that you need to update the disk driver, using HD SC Setup.
When I upgraded to 7.5.3, I didn't do this, and got a sad mac, and the
chimes of doom. A guick update from the floppy solved the problem. If you
have a boot floppy, you shouldn't have any problem. Give it a try.
