I was always wondering why AirPort 1.1 upgraded the Control Strip
extension to 2.0.2. Here is why (I think). It uses the first Control
Strip module that is constantly chatting with a PC Card. This is so when
you insert the WaveLan, you get status LED's etc.

Well folks, if you quit the Control Strip, YOU CAN EJECT THE CARD!!!!!

I guess the new Control Strip Extension is there for this reason, but...
since Apple only supports Wall Street and Bronze PB's for using WaveLane
with AP 1.1, the code to allow the release of the card is probably
specific to that hardware.

So, here are my findings:

First, there is only ONE extension necessary for the WaveLAN to work in a
2400:

AirPort PC Card

These next two are only needed if you want your 2400 to be a software
base station (which is sort of definitely unneeded based on someone
else's comment about only one network interface in a 2400):

AirPort AP
AirPort AP Support

The following extension is ONLY for Apple-branded airport cards (in other
words, leave it out):

AirPort Driver

As far as the updated Control Strip Extension goes, I'm leaving it out. I
think its G3 PB specific.
As far as the updated Open Transport extensions go, I recommend them. As
someone stated on the list, because of the fabulous Streams architecture
of OT, its not a problem.

Also, I have done ALL TESTING under 8.6, so ignore those 'minimum 9'
requirements. (This should make the 8.6 Society - which I am silently a
part of - happy!)

Now, last but not least, how do we work around the issue of the AirPort
Control Strip holding onto the card? Here are some solutions:

1. Don't use the control strip module - I don't like this one
2. Good ol' AppleScript:

tell app "Control Strip Extension" to quit
tell app "Control Strip Extension" to launch

3. This can be attached to a keyboard shortcut via OSA menu, or another
utility
4. It can be used as an 'Auto-Open Item' for those Location Manager savvy
people who would also like to switch their TCP/IP & AppleTalk configs to
Inactive at the same time (my recommendation)

Happy Airporting!!!
