Picture, if you're old enough, a manual typewriter.  The rows of keys were
tiered, not flat like computer keyboards -- with the number keys higher than
the QWERTY keys, which were higher than the ZXCVB keys, etc. It was
impossible to type with your palms down.  Correct typing position was to
have the hand hovering over the keyboard.  Funny, but we never heard about
carpal tunnel syndrome then -- but, of course, we didn't hear about any
repetitive-stress injuries then, and there must have been some.

I suspect that computer keyboards were not designed for touch-typists, but
for programmers, whose typing would be in relatively short bursts.

I always carry a paperback book with me to tilt the keyboard (well, okay,
and to read).
