I think that these sort of injuries weren't necessarily not common, but
their causes weren't understood. I have a hard time believing that they
didn't exist before our generation. Look at the industrial revolution, and
Henry Ford's innovation. Surely a large number of those people endured a
lot of pain, but the medical field hadn't caught up with other tech.

Re: the shape, I wonder if the extremely high tilt isn't better. It would
force you to hold you hands in a proper angle, and _not_ rest the wrists on
any surface (which is actually bad). I would think it would cause you to
move your upper arm more as well. It would be a very interesting computer
keyboard that could duplicate that shape. I think that's probably more the
reason than programmers. :-)
