One way (not the only way) is to use a hub instead of a crossover. This should always work Usually this problem means that you are encountering a nasty paradox built into MacOS. First, MacOS won't turn on the Ethernet port if nothing is using it (TCP/IP and AppleTalk being the two possible customers). Second, when you try to turn on AppleTalk, forcing MacOS to turn on Ethernet, it checks the Ethernet port to see if it looks like there's anything connected. If it doesn't see anything, it won't turn on the Ethernet port. This behavior is fine with the computer connected to a hub, which is always detected by MacOS since the hub's Ethernet ports are always on. But with a crossover, the other end is a Mac with the same behavior about turning on Ethernet. You can't turn one side's Ethernet on because the other side's isn't on, and vice versa. When I've had this problem in the past, I've been able to work around it by using TCP/IP to fool at least one side into turning its Ethernet on all the time. This can be done by configuring the TCP/IP control panel to use Ethernet, and using the Options panel (only available if you set the user mode to "Advanced") to configure TCP/IP to always be active (uncheck "Load only when needed"). TCP/IP doesn't have AppleTalk's hangups about activating the Ethernet port if nothing is there, and will cheerfully start it up. Then you can enable AppleTalk on both computers. If that doesn't work, I have no idea what will. Tim Seufert ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net! A listserv for users and fans of Mac subportables.
