Jack,

The Mac OS is very secure unless you leave the front door open (i.e.,
leave access to Guests as a default over TCP/IP or give away a user
id/pw) We do webhosting, so we see more cracking attempts than a normal
business office, but FAR less than our PC friends. And every successful
Mac hacking attempt we know of was some form of a id/pw breach, not a
true cracking. People will tape their login ID and password to their
monitors at work! How is it that we think we are the most advanced
species?

Oh, there were a couple of MacOSX server hacks that were successful, but
that was a Unix mistake, not a Mac OS mistake. OSX server is a Unix
build, not what we are accustomed to with the Finder, etc... Come the
end of the year when Apple releases the "other" OS X, we may be in for a
bit of a learning curve again. *nix can be made quite secure, but it
takes a little effort.

For some really general fluff about security, we have a "Security" link
within the webhosting pages at <http://www.afterhoursconsulting.org>.
And, if you click on the "Think" button at the bottom of the page, you
get an extra "Why Macs are Better" treat. A bit dated now, but still
relevant.

No serious holes have shown up with the exception of the TCP multiple
users issue that first sprang up with OS 9...

Guess I should close with the disclaimer that, yes, I know this is a Duo
list and this is as far as the security thread needs to go publically.
Back to our subnotebook discussions :)
