Regarding removing the dock cover:

I have a 2300 and two docks with manuals; one with a hard drive and the
other with an ethernet board so I'll be glad to share info that's in the
manuals (which isn't all that much). To open the dock, first remove the
computer, unplug the dock, then simultaneously pinch the raised bumps on
the left & right side of the opening (where the computer goes). When the
latches release, tilt the cover upward slightly (to about a 30 deg
angle) and then lift the angled cover straight up to remove it. The
manual then says to "touch the power supply case to discharge any static
electricity that might be on your clothes or body." The rest of the
instructions in this manual are to install a NuBus card which doesn't
apply to you.

Cover installation calls for: "Align the cover over the base, press down
firmly on the rear corners and then press down on the front corners
until the latches click."

Good luck!
