Hi,

I just bought a Duo 280 (Thanks Jose Dalisay for the "large stock of UK
duos" tip) but it came with a dead Type 3 battery.

I'm assuming it is dead because the Duo wont startup when the battery is in
(either in the Dock or using the AC adapter). If I startup without the
battery and then insert it later the Duo switches off abruptly. Measuring
the voltage on the battery with a multimeter gives a reading of about 1.7V.

Is it possible to get this battery to work - I've heard of people zapping
old batteries with a higher voltage to get rid of the internal "whiskers"
which prevent them working. Any more info on this?

Can I replace the internal NiMH cells? If so, does anyone know of a source
in the UK for the correct components?

Finally if I try and startup with a Type 1 battery in the 280, it will
switch on but crash after a few seconds. Is this because the active matrix
screen or the LC68040 takes a higher current which the Type 1s can't
provide?
i.e. does the 280 abolutely require a Type 3 battery?

Thanks,

Michael
