Yes, but of course that won't give you a complant (Video-)DVD.

I just save the files as MPEG program streams and store them on a data
DVD (in the root directory of the ISO filesystem) with growisofs.

That happens with my (no-name) player as well, but I can select 16:9
format at the TV (not at the player).

I suppose they expect a Video-DVD structure (that is, a VIDEO_TS
directory with VOB files in it).
