as you may have read in between, I just used this hint from David 
successfully. There is one difference: Autoconf did not create a 
configure script but a new Makefile. So I had to leave out ./configure 
and just fired up make.

I noticed the (cached) thing but I didn't know about the consequences.
I did a make distclean and thought any memory would go away whith that.
