OK, if Monotone is not going to group files according to how they are
changed, then I guess it makes sense to use rename_target and
rename_source, so feel free to make that change, as long as it doesn't
modify the "terse" method :^) .

This would confuse me because the same rename operation would be listed
twice.  I think better would be just to use rename_(target|source) or
"rename (target|source)".
