I have set dvc-read-project-tree-mode to unless-specified, and when invoking C-u M-x dvc-status I'm asked for a directory. Now I'm seeing two different behaviours: 1) When invoked from a dvc status buffer showing the output of a previous hg status, the hg status is run with the supplied subdirectory and all is well. 2) When invoked from another buffer, the subdirectory is ignored and it again travels up to the project root before invoking hg status. While I'm fine with it as is, probably 2) is not what you had in mind.
