Turning DMA off enabled me to write out a DVD. Wicked. Tubular, even.
...It's a mystery why my init scripts turned DMA off and then on again for hdb, but that's another story -- as is my proficiency at creating DVDs that do more than just mount as ISO9660 filesystems (like, for example, play)...
