That's true, but I'm not sure whether that's a big limitation.

After all, you can't use a comma in a LiveJournal userpic keyword, or
a(n unquoted) space in a Flickr tag, since those are used to separate
keywords/tags.

So saying that "colons in DW tags are special" needn't be that bad,
especially if it's well-documented.

Bonus points if it can be escaped (like enclosing things in quotes
lets you embed spaces in tags on Flickr - so people could perhaps
have, say, "CSI:Miami" as one single, non-hierarchical tag if they
include those quotes, or something).
