I don't see any real benefit over simply pressing mod-f. I mean, if folks are that confused over their current/previous layout, they could just press the layout key for whatever mode they desire. By having a togglelayout() feature that worked for any mode, it would allow folks to quickly go to a desired mode and jump back to the previous when they're done.
