Hi Ernie, I say it DES A CHAY O. Most fellow DXers up here in W1 land with more than a few years in the game say it the same way. The new DXers have a variety of ways to say it, just as they say the name of VQ9. I've heard SHA GOS, SHAG OS, SHAG US. (All with a short A, O and U) My friends here in Rhode Island say CHA-GOS (with a long A and O) I imagine there are some regional differences with dialects and accents causing it to come out differently in other parts of the US and of course, other countries.
According to the "TAINO INDIGENOUS PEOPLES OF THE CARIBBEAN" dictionary, Desecheo.-Islote al 0. de Puerto Rico. Oviedo escribe Cicheo. Es Si-keo. Si por ti, alto. ke, tierra; o, montaƱa. So, the native pronounciation may be using a hard C sound, such as DE SI KEO. However, according to the DXCC dictionary, it's pronounced Kilo Papa Five. 73, Bob W1YRC ----- Original Message ----- From: Ernie Walls To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, March 05, 2009 17:07 PM Subject: [DX-CHAT] Desecheo A question on Desecheo, site of the recent Dxpedition that we all spent some time chasing! Does anyone know the correct pronunciation of the place - there is quite a fundamental difference of opinion amongst a few amateurs at my club. My stab is DE SESH E O - but this may be nothing like it should be. Any further input, please?
