AB2QV COMMENTS: The ham radio volunteers in these regions should be alert and ready to assist the govt and the people. Ham radio volunteers who have been in the disaster areas should continue to assist the aid process and be cautious with the next possible impact. Only a few people around the world know that since day one, the Indonesian ORARI (national hamradio organization) volunteers have been deployed and assisted the emergency communication in northern Sumatra island. Ham radio volunteers have struggled and been busy managing emergency communications during power, telecoms and water outages as well as land transportation damage. These volunteers deserve a HUGE credit, indeed.
Ham radio operators and shortwave listeners around the world can tune in their HF rigs or shortwave radios to the Sumatra Emergency Net Control YB6ZZ or YB6ZES on 7.055 MHz (40m) and 21.300MHz (15m) as well as YD6AT in Banda Aceh on 3.815MHz (80m).
W. Purwinto, AB2QV, Syracuse, New York -------------
W2VU Note: While hams and SWLs are encouraged to monitor these and other emergency nets, you should NOT try to check in unless there is a specific need that you can help meet. Amateur radio officials in the affected areas have asked that NO incoming health and welfare traffic be sent, at least until all outgoing traffic has been handled. As always in the event of ongoing emergency communications, LISTEN before transmitting and make sure you are not interfering with an emergency net in progress. LISTEN between transmissions of your own QSOs in case there are stations in affected areas that need help.
