You can simply install the new version and you are ready to go. There are four things that most of us want to do, though: 1) Move your old logbook where the new version will know what was in it and convert it to the new format. 2) If you wrote out all of your preferences before the upgrade, they are stored in a file called DX4WIN.ini (or whatever you called it). When you merge the .ini file, it puts all of your preferences (except those that were not previously used) into the new program so that you DONT HAVE to do it manually. 3) Over the years, you have probably made a lot of callsign exceptions (like K1B) and you can move all of those forward to the new version by simply merging the only country file. You (or I) would not want these things dones automatically as there are a lot of considerations to make when setting up the logging software and you probably DONT want to merge the IOTA database from your old system, since the new one is more current. You may want to keep all of your old QSL managers and addresses as they are important to you and the merge allows this to happen. 4) I want my old report files rather than the new ones and I had to put the $$ back in contest mode to record the exact frequencies for each contact, which I want to keep in my log.
Paul give some good information on the upgrade process, and fortunately leaves the decisions to the DXer rather than the programmer, on exactly how the upgrade is to be accomplished. I certainly don't consider this starting over or doing it all manual. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of TG9AJR Sent: Wednesday, January 29, 2003 4:19 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Dx4win] Moving Log file Importance: High Then why is called an upgrade if we have to do it manually ? Couple of things to mention here: 1. The Version 5 DX4WIN.CFG file is incompatible with Version 6. Copying it will do no good. You must go to Preferences in V5 and write the .INI file, then merge this into V6 from the same menu. Make sure to look at EACH preferences tab after doing this, as some of the settings don't transfer (like ICOM radio baud rate). Paul added some new awards flags, and those may not transfer properly either. 2. There were some changes to the DX4WIN.CTY file to corrrect county names. You will lose these changes if you over-write the V6 file with your V5 file. It's best to merge the CTY files, which DX4WIN should do automatically when you upgrade. 73 - Jim AD1C ===== Jim Reisert AD1C, 7 Charlemont Court, North Chelmsford, MA 01863 USA +978-251-9933, <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, http://www.ad1c.com PGP Fingerprint: D8E2 3D78 339F A7F1 8C13 1193 B5D1 4FB6 79D1 70DC _______________________________________________ Dx4win mailing list [email protected] http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win . --- StripMime Report -- processed MIME parts --- multipart/related multipart/alternative text/plain (text body -- kept) text/html image/gif The reason this message is shown is because the post was in HTML or had an attachment.
