Kostas and Mel, Thanks for your suggestion. Each of you had part of the solution: the CI-V setup must have transceive set at OFF and the Packet 1 preferences screen must be set to ignore the "update USO window." Neither of these alone seem to do the trick, but with both of the setup as described works like a charm.
