This can sometimes happen if you try to start two instances of DX4WIN at the same time. The only way to recover is if you have saved your preferences to a .INI file (in your Preferences, File | Write INI file). If you have one, open your preferences, then File | Merge from INI file. If you do not have a INI file, then you will have to enter all your preferences again.
